Bouzouki of the Patriarch I | Hand painted Unique Greek-Turkish Traditional String Instrument

750.00

Bouzouki is a Greco-Turkish traditional stringed music organ that came to Greece in the 1900s, by immigrants from Asia Minor (the name “bouzouki” comes from the Turkish word “bozuk,” meaning “broken” or “modified”). Soon, it became the core of any band playing rebetika, a genre evolved during hard times in Greece (for music theorists, this is the Greek blues genre).
This bouzouki’s name is inspired by Márkos Vamvakáris, a rebetiko musician that is globalluy reffered by fans and writers by his first name: “Márkos”. His great significance for this genuine music genre is reflected by his nickname, “patriarch of the rebetiko”, which inspired us to name this bouzouki after him…

As a music instrument, bouzouki is a direct descendant of the Byzantine’s pandouras and tambouras. The also known Irish bouzouki is a more recent development that emerged after the introduction of the Greek instrument into Irish music by Johnny Moynihan in 1965 (and its later adoption by Andy Irvine, Alec Finn and Dónal Lunny).
For our instruments, we use mulberry wood for the soundbox, spruce wood for the soundboard, mulberry or maple wood for its neck and ebony for its fretboard. It is worth mentioning here that every kind of wood is carefully chosen for every part of the instrument, taking into account its “musicality” and its durability, but staying close to the instrument’s tradition.
This is a unique top quality instrument with beautiful and rich sound, painted by hand. This is why it is one-of-a-kind…
Our bouzouki is 96 cm in length and 31 cm in width. Its soundbox has dimensions 30 x 40 x 26 cm, while the length of its vibrating strings is 68 cm. It has 3 pairs of strings, resulting in 6 strings in total.

Every bouzouki comes with a set of extra strings, and a booklet in which several modes are explained, along with music sheets of the most well known rebetika songs.
Our instruments are shipped in secure packages, and they are labelled as “fragile” in the postal office.
What’s more, we can manufacture for you top-quality beautifully manufactured custom wooden cases (with your logo or an image of your choice) for storing or moving around your new bouzouki!
